ING savings account and digital cameras

November 2nd, 2007 at 02:16 pm

I have 2 questions and would appreciate any and all input Smile

First, I have read many blogs where people have mentioned ING accounts. I went to their website and saw their options for both savings and checking accounts. Since I am slightly leary of banking with an establishment that doesn't have somewhere to go to if there is a problem I have been hesitant to open an account. What has been peoples experience with these totally online bank accounts, both good and bad?

Secondly, I am thinking of buying my sister a digital camera for Christmas. She is my only living relative (besides my family of marriage) and don't feel guilty buying her a big ticket item for Christmas. However I do want to get a good deal. I have seen some good prices on the Kodak Easyshare. Anyone have any suggestions for brand and where to buy? She doesn't need anything fancy, just something to take pictures of her son and print at home.

Thanks for any and all advice Smile

I use online accounts for their high yield savings only. These are accounts that I rarely touch, but have money automatically deposited into. I have never had a problem. I use Emigrant mostly, but have one new account with ING. So far, no trouble.

No advice on the ING part, but I will share some input on the digital camera question. I have had two HP cameras and loved them both. I only stopped using the first one because I wanted a smaller, newer model. It still works great. They are easy to use, and I have found HP customer service to be excellent. If you are leaning toward the Easyshare and have a CVS near you, I heard that will be a Black Friday sale item there.

I just got a new digital camera a few months ago. Mine is the Sony Cyber Shot(DSC-S650). It is 7.2 megapixels, and an 1 1/2 by 1 1/4 inch screen. My dad loved it so much, the next day he want out and bought one for himself. I got mine at Target for about $130 on sale. Regular price is around $160.

I have been using INg since last Januanry and I love it, I just open a checking account but I do not use as much only because I like writing my own checks. However I must say when I did us the checking it was fast and I had no problems...good luck with your choice

I use ING and Emigrant also. I have not had any problems with either one. And they are insured the
    same as any other bank.

I have a Canon S2IS camera and I do love it. But I also had some problems with it when I first got it and hated the Canon customer service. Someone else mentioned their HP camera. I haven't used an HP camera but I have used their other products and have always been satisfied with them Thats probably the next brand camera I'd get.
Ohh also make sure whatever camera you get has all the features you think you might want. The zoom and the megapixles are 2 of the most important features I look at. Hope that helps some. Good luck.

I prefer to have checking with a brick & mortar bank or credit union. The only thing I need there is free checking, but it sure is nice to know there are branches and ATMs nearby and all over much of the country... even if I don't go there often.

As for savings, it's online all the way. Overall, online banks have the best rates, and it's not hard to link them to your checking. I know many like and are with ING, but.. I don't personally care for them. There are better deals out there, and many are just as reliable.

Finally, Canon and Sonys are good brands. I myself have a Canon and all things being equal, would recommend them instead. Even a low-end camera nowadays is quite good. In my opinion, Kodak's strength is in its tight integration with its proprietary 3x5 picture printer. I've seen it in action at work, and it's pretty much foolproof.

Most of my financial "empire" is with online accounts. They are secure (within reason) and I've received good customer service over the phone with ING in the beginning. I haven't needed it much after that. I've also had good customer service with Paypal, which lately is paying about 4.9%. I wouldn't be moving a lot of money around on a public WiFi site.

I like my Nikon Coolpix. All of the pictures that I have on my blog are from the Nikon. Once you get much above 4-5 megapixels, its a bit of a wash. I've been finding that if I'd appreciate a faster shutter speed so I can take multiple shots within a short period of time.

I have had ING accounts for nearly 2 years, and a Bankwest account for a year. They're great, the only problem is if you're transfering money out of it, it takes about two or three days. I've had no hassles, they're good with sending statements and offer the best rates for no fees, and no minimum deposit. Also another good thing is that the interest compounds daily, so for those times when i had a couple of spare thousands, I have put it into my ING account for two weeks until I needed to take it out again, and earned a couple of dollars. so my advice is go for it.
