Donating Blood and Travel Soccer

August 26th, 2008 at 10:59 am

Here at the medical center where I work the Red Cross does blood drives all the time. It seems like they are here every other week recruiting people to donate. They are here today and are offering a free movie ticket, free tshirt, and a chance to win a $500 gift card to some store. Right about now I am wishing I wasn't so squimish about giving blood. Unfortunately I tend to faint when I have to have blood drawn and that has kept me away from donating. Anyone out there a regular blood donater? I guess if I got someone really experienced it wouldn't be so bad but I tend to hold my breathe and think about how much I can feel the needle in my vein...crazy I know. But think about all the free movies I could see while helping out people who need blood.

DH needed me to write him a check for $300 out of our savings account this morning. He is a school counselor and only works about 5 days during the summer. Towards the end of the summer if he doesn't budget correctly he runs out of money.

I also have to pay for my daughter's travel soccer team fees. Anyone have kids that play a travel sport? I believe for the year we owe $350. DH and I talked about it being a big expense but DD is kinda shy and we thought this would be a good way to help her come out of her shell and form some more friendships.

I cleaned out my closet and gathered up some stuff that I don't wear anymore to take to the consignment store I always go to. When I am there I will be able to pick up my check from last season. I am anxious to see how much it is for as I had quite a few items that were excepted. I am going to try to do that this week sometime.

I also have to get my car inspected and the oil changed this week. I am over on both and with my luck I will get a ticket for the expired inspection, don't need that!

$350 for travel soccer is cheap where I live. Is that for competitive? We are saving for competitive fees for next year and I have budgeted $700. It might be as high as $1,000 though.

I donate! We just went on Saturday. A place near us does an annual pancake breakfast - made fresh to order while you donate. Plus they gave us certificates for free half gallons of ice cream. Smile We're both O+ and feel quite obligated to donate. Unfortunately, it had been too long since we last went. Scheduling issues - not excusable!

It's mind over matter for me when it comes to needles. I just imagine it will hurt so bad and I focus the pain in the area where the needle will be. Guess what - it never really hurts when I do that. It's over before you know it.

little l- this is the first year my DD is playing travel soccer. It is competitive in that they will compete against other teams but she is only 8 so they will also be learning a lot.

I used to be a competitive soccer coach. $350 is cheap, what are the hidden fees (travel, tournaments, uniform)? Is the coach paid? Paid trainers? other paid staff?

$350 for YEAR is dirt cheap
$350 for one season is cheap
$500/season around here is par for the course. I saw parents dropping $1500 or $2500 for one SEASON and they had 3 kids playing. And that was before travel costs get factored in (gas, food, hotels).
