Budget software

December 18th, 2008 at 02:27 pm

I am considering purchasing some budget software.

The Mint thing didn't work out for me. As much as I like the idea of it all being on line it was reliable at all. My transactions wouldn't download and half the time my accounts couldn't connect. Not worth the aggravation.

So, I am going to do some homework and look into YNAB and Quicken. My home computer came with a version of Quicken which is like 7 years old now.

Anyone have any suggestions or opinions as to which they like better? What should I avoid? Anything?

Thanks!

Huge YNAB fan here. Big Grin It isn't an online program, but you are able to download info from your accounts. There is a great forum where you can ask any questions you have about it, and will get answers quickly. http://www.ynabpro.com/forum/index.php

I'm another Mvelopes user. As Merch pointed out, it does cost money. But it is without a doubt the best thing that I've ever done for my personal finances and has certainly paid for itself in saved CC interest and helping plug the leaky spending holes.

I track everything with an excel spreadsheet, but I wouldn't reccommend it. I still make mistakes and it turns out not to be too accurate.

I just started with You Need a Budget and it appears to be very good.

I'm not sure it matters which budget software you use as long as you create a plan and stick to it. Living within your means takes time, patience and creativity, but the rewards are more than worth the sacrifice.
